Product data standards are the foundation of MenPS because comparison breaks down when every product is described using a different set of fields. Retailers and manufacturers are free to present products in the way that best supports their own sales process. A catalog needs a different objective: consistent representation of the facts that users need to compare products.
The first field group is product identity. A record should identify the product name, manufacturer or brand, broad category and dosage form. Where a stable product identifier such as a SKU, UPC or other official identifier is available and appropriate, it can be stored as supporting data. Identity fields help prevent two package sizes or regional variants from being treated as the same product when they are materially different.
The second group is formula data. MenPS should record the ingredients shown on the current label, the amounts disclosed per serving, the serving size and relevant ingredient forms where those forms are stated. The catalog must not estimate an ingredient amount that the label does not disclose. If several ingredients appear under a proprietary blend with only a total blend weight, that should be represented explicitly.
Serving information is important because a milligram amount without the serving context can be misleading. A product may require one capsule, several capsules or one scoop to reach the labeled serving. Where the data is available, MenPS should distinguish quantity per unit from quantity per labeled serving. The objective is not to recommend a dose but to represent the product accurately.
Transparency fields provide a structured way to classify disclosure. A product may be fully disclosed for its principal active ingredients, partially disclosed or dependent on one or more proprietary blends. This attribute should be based on the current label rather than assumptions about the brand. A transparent label is not automatically an effective formula, but it gives users more information to compare.
Quality fields require a different verification process. Claims such as third-party tested, NSF Certified for Sport, USP Verified or Informed Sport should not be copied indiscriminately from promotional pages. Where MenPS uses a certification filter, current status should be checked against an appropriate official source or documentation. The record should preserve when the claim was verified because status can change.
Market availability is also time-sensitive. A product shown on a US retailer does not prove availability in Canada, the UK or India. Country records should be attached only when the product has been identified in the relevant market through a suitable source. Retailer, currency and observed date can be stored where useful. Availability means the product was observed in the market; it should not be interpreted as a guarantee of current stock.
Price data, if introduced, needs its own standards. A price without currency, package size, retailer and observed date is not meaningfully comparable. MenPS should treat price as a snapshot rather than a permanent product property. Affiliate relationships, if added later, should not determine which products are allowed into the underlying database.
Evidence connections are relational fields rather than product claims. A product containing creatine can link to the MPS creatine evidence page. A product using a proprietary blend can link to the MPS explainer on proprietary blends. This lets MenPS remain focused on product data while giving users a path to independent interpretation.
Source provenance should be retained for every important changing field. A single product record may use the manufacturer for formula data, an official certifier for certification status and a retailer for country availability. Combining these sources is acceptable as long as each field remains attributable and the source type is clear.
Data quality also requires correction rules. When a user or company reports a changed formula, MenPS should verify the change before updating the record. Old data should not silently survive simply because it was correct when first entered. The most important fields should have visible or stored verification dates so stale records can be prioritized for review.
The standard applies equally to future branded pages. Building the field system before launching hundreds of named product URLs means later pages can be generated from a reliable product graph rather than from copied marketing text. That is the main reason product data standards are a core public trust page rather than an internal technical detail.
A mature product record should also preserve enough context to support change over time. If a formula is updated, MenPS should be able to distinguish a genuinely reformulated product from a temporary retailer description error. Version-sensitive fields can store the verification date and source so future audits know which record is newer. This is especially important when several regional versions of a product exist.
Consistency also improves search and filtering. If dosage form, ingredient names, certification status and markets are normalized into controlled fields, users can discover products across categories without relying on exact marketing terminology. The data standard therefore serves both editorial accuracy and the technical foundation for future programmatic pages.
